Motion: No hardening of the border in Ireland

Council - 5th June 2018

To consider the following motion to which due notice has been given:

“This Council supports paragraph 49 of the agreed Joint Report of December 2017 which is an approach that will ensure there is no hardening of the border in Ireland and wants to see the ‘backstop’ option as defined in paragraph 49 included in the legally binding Withdrawal Agreement.

Further to that this Council will proactively lobby for retaining the ‘backstop’ in the Withdrawal Agreement unless and until something better emerges.

In addition, this Council wants the full EU rights of citizens protected as proposed in the current draft Withdrawal Agreement.”

Proposed by: Councillor J Feely, Seconded by Councillor A Feely and supported by Councillors Greene, Maguire, McCaffrey and McCann
