Climate Champion

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to announce Claire Maguire and Colette O’Hare from Mount Lourdes Grammar School, Enniskillen, as the inaugural winners of the Community Climate Champion Award for March 2025.

Launched to spotlight outstanding local efforts to combat climate change, the Community Climate Champion programme recognises individuals or groups each month who are taking meaningful climate action and promoting sustainability across the district.
Claire and Colette were selected for their pioneering work in hosting a major sustainability conference in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast. The event brought together approximately 250 students from Mount Lourdes and other Fermanagh schools, offering a dynamic and hands-on learning experience centred on climate action and sustainable futures.

Highlights of the conference included a student-led panel discussion featuring voices from the education and business sectors, exploring how young people can influence sustainability and develop skills aligned with the green economy. Pupils also engaged in a simulated business meeting, discussing ways education and industry can collaborate to drive environmental progress, as well as taking part in a series of interactive and innovative workshops.

The conference not only provided invaluable insight into sustainability in business and potential career pathways, but also empowered students with the knowledge and inspiration to become future environmental leaders.
Claire and Colette are deserving recipients of the award for the innovative and impactful nature of the event. Their efforts have left a lasting legacy, encouraging a culture of environmental awareness and positive climate action among local young people.

Nominations for the Community Climate Champion programme are open year-round, with monthly winners selected for their contributions to areas such as recycling, biodiversity, energy saving, litter-picking, and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
