Council Chair hosts reception to mark 75th anniversary of Magheracross Mothers’ Union
5th November 2026
Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Debbie Coyle, recently welcomed members of Magheracross Mothers’ Union to the Townhall, Enniskillen, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the branch.
Speaking at the reception, Councillor Coyle said:
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to recognise this important milestone and to congratulate everyone involved in the branch on this significant achievement. Seventy-five years is an extraordinary accomplishment. It represents not only longevity, but also a remarkable record of commitment, faith and service. It is a testament to those who have given their time and energy over many years to support their church, their families and their wider community.
“Founded in 1951, Magheracross Mothers’ Union has continued to grow and evolve while remaining true to its founding values. Throughout the decades, the branch has benefited from the dedication of many committed members. It is particularly special to recognise Mrs Noreen Elliott, whose 73 years of membership represent an outstanding contribution to Magheracross Mothers’ Union. Her long-standing involvement is a wonderful example of the loyalty, commitment and enduring friendships that are at the heart of organisations such as yours.”
Councillor Coyle also acknowledged the current leadership team: Vivien Clarke, Branch Leader; Doris Byers, Secretary; and Sandra Robinson, Treasurer, for their work in supporting the branch and its members.
Councillor Coyle said: “Anniversaries such as this allow us to look back with pride while recognising the continuing importance of the work you do today. The Mothers’ Union has always been about people, offering friendship, support and opportunities to come together in a spirit of shared purpose. Through your activities and outreach, you help strengthen connections, reduce isolation and foster a sense of belonging within the community.
“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council recognises the important role that organisations such as Magheracross Mothers’ Union play in building strong, sustainable and inclusive communities. The wellbeing of our district depends not only on services and facilities, but also on the dedication of voluntary and community organisations that support local people and help create places where everyone feels connected and valued.
“I am pleased to acknowledge the contribution these organisations make across our district. Their impact is often felt in ways that cannot easily be measured, through a kind word, a listening ear, a helping hand or simply being there when someone needs support. This year also marks 150 years since Mothers’ Union was founded by Mary Sumner. From those beginnings, it has grown into a worldwide movement while continuing to promote the values of compassion, service and friendship. As we celebrate 75 years of Magheracross Mothers’ Union, we celebrate the contributions of all those who have helped shape and sustain the branch throughout its history.
“I hope you can take great pride in what has been achieved and look forward with confidence to the future. May Magheracross Mothers’ Union continue to flourish, welcoming new members and making a positive difference in the lives of others.”
The Chair concluded: “On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I offer my warmest congratulations on your 75th anniversary. Thank you for the contribution you make to your community. I wish you every success for the future and hope you enjoy this special occasion together. Thank you, and congratulations once again.”
