From 6 April 2016 all retailers in Northern Ireland who sell tobacco related products must be registered under the Tobacco Retailers Act (Northern Ireland) 2014.  The new legislation is just one of a range of measures being introduced in order to reduce smoking prevalence amongst children and young people.

How do I register?

Registration is quick, easy and free.  Retailers can register online on the Tobacco Register NI homepage http://www.tobaccoregisterni.gov.uk  , by downloading an application form.

All retailers have until 1 July 2016 to register.  It will then be illegal to sell tobacco products if you are not registered to do so.

The Tobacco Retailers Act also introduced a number of additional provisions, including the offence of proxy purchasing, i.e. an adult buying tobacco products on behalf of a child.  The maximum fine applicable for selling tobacco to a person under the age of 18 increases from £2,500 to £5,000.
