Positive Ageing Month

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and lead partners, Western Health and Social Care Trust, Public Health Agency and South West Age Partnership are working together to promote Positive Ageing Month throughout the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area during the month of October.

Launching Positive Ageing Month, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Councillor Thomas O’Reilly said:

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Network for Age Friendly Cities and Communities.

One of the themes of the Council’s new Draft Corporate Plan 2020 – 2024 and the Fermanagh and Omagh Community Plan 2030 is to help and encourage older people to lead more independent, engaged and socially connected lives.

Positive Ageing Month is one such initiative where, in association with its partners Western Health and Social Care Trust, South West Age Partnership and the Public Health Agency, the Council has put together an extensive array of events and workshops to promote this objective.”

Councillor O’Reilly added:

“I am delighted that the Council has been able to put together such a wide range of activities for you all to celebrate Positive Ageing Month which will be delivered live and online.

The recent Census found that 18% of the population in the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area is aged 65 years and over, an increase from 14% in 2011, therefore, events such as Positive Ageing Month are particularly important and welcome.

I would encourage as many people as possible to participate in the events.”

Seamus Ward, Head of Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement, Western Health and Social Care Trust commented:

“The Western Trust is delighted to support the Positive Ageing campaign again this year.

There is a diverse range of programmes and activities on offer and we are pleased once again to be involved and help promote this great opportunity to celebrate the contribution that older people make to our communities.

We would like to thank our partners for all their hard work in delivering another successful Positive Ageing Month Campaign.  We encourage everyone to take a look at this year’s brochure and get out and about and get involved in as many activities as you can.” Marj Aitken, Chair of South West Partnership said:

“Welcome to another Positive Ageing Month.  This year has gone even faster than last year, if that’s possible.

We have another busy month of learning, engagement, fun and support planned for October, it gets better and better every year.  This year we have some lovely sessions planned indoors, outdoors and online, we are trying to reach as many people as possible.

Hopefully I will see some of you over Positive Ageing Month at one the planned activities.”
