Local Community Celebrates as East Erne Townlands Jigsaw Project Reaches Successful Finale

East Erne residents joined participants from schools, community groups, Men’s Sheds and organisations from across the area at the Castle Park Centre, Lisnaskea, on Friday 18 September to celebrate the grand finale of the ‘Many Pieces, One Place’ Townlands Jigsaw Project as part of Culture Night 2026.

Delivered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, brought together 12 primary schools and 18 community organisations in the creation of a large-scale community artwork representing all 747 townlands within the area.

Over recent months, participants dedicated countless hours to researching, designing and creating individual jigsaw pieces that celebrate the unique heritage, landmarks, stories and identity of their local townlands. When combined, these pieces formed a striking artwork that showcases both the rich diversity of the area and the strong connections that unite its communities.

More than just an art project, the initiative provided opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to work together, share local knowledge, explore their heritage and build meaningful connections. Participants embraced the project with enthusiasm, demonstrating exceptional creativity, commitment and pride in their communities.

The completed jigsaw stands as a lasting symbol of collaboration, illustrating how individual townlands can come together to create something truly special that reflects the collective identity of the East Erne area.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Debbie Coyle, said:

“This project has been a tremendous success and I would like to sincerely thank everyone who took part. The time, effort and creativity invested by the 12 primary schools, 18 community organisations, Men’s Sheds and local residents has been truly remarkable.

The dedication shown by participants over many months has resulted in an impressive piece of community artwork that celebrates the heritage, character and identity of all 747 townlands across the East Erne area.

One of the greatest achievements of this project has been its ability to bring people together. By working in partnership, participants from different generations, communities and townlands have connected, shared experiences and strengthened their appreciation of the area’s rich heritage and unique identity.

The Townlands Jigsaw Project has demonstrated the power of collaboration, creating a unique celebration of local identity, heritage and place while strengthening connections between communities throughout the East Erne area. Through the project, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council worked with local schools, groups and residents to celebrate the area’s rich cultural heritage and foster a strong sense of place.
