‘Youth in Action’ 2021 Programme

Twenty seven young people from across the community and the district participated in this unique youth programme. It included an online Developing Leadership Skills training, a face-to-face Mental Health workshop, Community Sports Leadership training, film-making skills training and a cross-border football tournament involving two guest teams. The programme concluded with a Chair’s Reception event to celebrate the young participants’ achievement of accredited qualifications, but also offered a panel discussion with local Councillors, a highly appropriate engagement during Democracy Week.

During the programme, the participants had the opportunity to learn practical leadership and coaching skills, explore mental health and resilience, experiment with film-making, meet influencers like former Chelsea FC star, Paul Canoville, and Northern Ireland international, Ashley Hutton, make new friendships and gain the confidence to be the next generation of youth leaders.

Speaking about the programme, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson, said;

“The ‘Youth in Action’ programme focussed on tackling inequality, racism and sectarianism through accredited leadership, skills and vocational training. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is very grateful to the Rio Ferdinand Foundation for its support to the programme.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak with the programme participants, welcome them to the Council Offices during Democracy Week and present them with their certificates. From talking to the young people, I was impressed by their enthusiasm and how they were able to articulate their views in a positive manner. It was evident that they found the programme both interesting and enjoyable.”
