Motion: Urgent Mitigations to Save lives on the A5
Council Meeting - 24th July 2025
This Council:
restates our corporate position of total commitment to achieving the full delivery of the A5 dual carriageway.
acknowledges the Infrastructure Minister's commitment to ensuring that the A5 is delivered
which will save lives, create jobs and reduce journey times.
recognises and supports the Department for Infrastructures Road Safety strategy which sets out a range of actions to improve safety and reduce accidents on all of our roads
This Council has heard the comments made around the recent judgement around the A5 road construction decision Mr Justice McAlinden said “it is likely that delays in the progress of this scheme will coincide with the occurrence of further loss of life and serious injury on the existing road.”
Minister Kimmins said “It is the most dangerous road in Ireland.”
This Council calls on Minister Kimmins, Minister Long, Minister Givan, Minister Lyons and Minister O’Dowd to immediately set up interim plans and actions to prevent further loss of life.
These could include extra visible PSNI patrols, static speed cameras, Average speed along the A5, speed limit reduction, driver education and signs warning How dangerous this road is and any other measures that could prevent a death.
This Council will write to the ministers to demand Immediate action informing them that to wait for a new road and accept further loss of life is not an option.
