Motion: Removal of entitlement to use red diesel

Council Meeting - 1st February 2022

That Fermanagh and Omagh District Council calls on UK Government and HM Treasury to cease its plans to remove the entitlement to use red diesel from most sectors and sends a letter stating our opposition to such proposals.

The government is making changes to red diesel (off-road diesel) taxation.  From 1st April 2022 it is removing tax relief for red diesel for several industries – effectively a ban on red diesel for many of its current users.

Therefore, from April 2022, the entitlement to use red diesel and rebated fuels will be far more restrictive than the current rules.

At the very least, the proposal to end the red diesel rebate for use in the construction industry should be postponed and the Government instead adopt a transitional period to allow the development of alternative fuel sources capable of powering machinery and processes within the construction sector”.
