Motion: PSNI Support for Mining Interests

Special Council Meeting - 18th October 2021

That this Council is opposed to the recently announced decision that mineral exploration & mining companies will be provided with full security services by the PSNI paid for by the public purse. This proposal to treat highly toxic mineral mining the same as quarrying for ‘essential’ sand and gravel is totally unacceptable and wrong and must be reversed.

It is disgraceful that the Stormont Executive would waste tax payers’ money to finance Canadian mining companies especially when they already fully refund them their ‘exploration costs’.

This Council is outraged that the Executive would slip in this policy change especially at a time when the Health Service is on its knees for lack of resources and education & public services are at breaking point.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council calls on those with the authority to do so to re-visit and reverse this decision, taking into consideration the huge public opposition to toxic extractivism during the ongoing Climate Crisis.
