Motion: Living Wage

Council Meeting - 13th January 2026

This Council:

Notes that many businesses and public bodies have either already become, or intend to become, Accredited Living Wage Employers, including the Executive, and other Councils in the North.

Recognises the huge benefits that flow from paying all staff the real living wage including; improved staff morale, better retention, stronger recruitment, and a clear statement of commitment to fairness and workers’ rights.

Further Recognises that Becoming a Real Living Wage employer also strengthens our leadership role in promoting social value through procurement and sets a positive example for businesses and organisations across our district.

Acknowledges that all Fermanagh and Omagh District Council direct employees already receive the Real Living Wage.

Believes that the Real Living Wage should also be paid to any contracted staff or agency workers under a contract for services with the Council.

Therefore, this Council agrees to:

  1. Bring forward a plan in consultation with Advice NI, Trade Unions, and other key stakeholders to implement the Real Living Wage across all staff categories, including those Contracted staff under a contract for services with the Council.
  2. Work toward accreditation with the Living Wage Foundation and aim to become a fully accredited Real Living Wage employer.
  3. Bring a report to Council outlining options, costs, financial impacts on businesses, and a proposed timeline to deliver these changes.

We believe fair pay is a foundation of dignity in work and essential to building a stronger, fairer local economy
