Motion: Dementia

Council Meeting - 2nd March 2021

“That Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC) notes with concern figures from NISRA showing that over 36% of those who died with Covid-19 in the North of Ireland in a six-month period last year also had dementia.

This Council urges Minister for Health Robin Swann to make dementia a  standalone priority in his Department’s reform of Adult Social Care.

This will ensure that those who are living with dementia will be better protected now and into the future. This includes working with the Care  Home sector to allow safe ‘Care Partner’ visiting.

This Council will commit to build on the work of Alzheimer’s Society of creating Dementia Friendly Communities by hosting a virtual ‘Dementia Friendly Workshop’.

This Council will increase the awareness and confidence of our staff to better relate to, support and communicate with people with dementia to help tackle stigma, establish best practice and reduce barriers for our ageing  population within our Council area.”
