Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry – “An Indefatigable Field-Worker” Talk at Castle Coole
22nd June 2026
Fermanagh County Museum at Enniskillen Castle, in partnership with the National Trust’s Castle Coole, is delighted to present Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry: “An Indefatigable Field-Worker”, a special illustrated talk by Dr Kieran O’Conor of the University of Galway, taking place on Saturday, 27 June 2026.
This event will explore the remarkable life and legacy of Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry (1885–1967), a pioneering archaeologist and passionate advocate for the preservation of heritage in Fermanagh and beyond. Born at Castle Coole as the second youngest child of the 4th Earl of Belmore, Lady Dorothy devoted much of her life to the study and protection of archaeological sites, ranging from prehistoric monuments to medieval churches and sculpture.
In this engaging talk, Dr O’Conor will examine Lady Dorothy’s significant contributions to the study and safeguarding of archaeological heritage, set within the historic surroundings where her story began. The event will also include a guided tour of Castle Coole, followed by tea and coffee refreshments.
Dr Kieran O’Conor is a leading medieval archaeologist and academic at the University of Galway. His research focuses on castles, medieval rural settlement, high medieval Gaelic Ireland, and medieval landscapes. He has published extensively, lectured internationally, and held senior roles within major heritage and archaeological organisations. His interest in Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry is also personal, as his paternal grandmother was a Lowry-Corry and Lady Dorothy’s first cousin.
Reflecting on her legacy, Dr O’Conor said:
“Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry did a great service to her native county of Fermanagh by highlighting in her time the richness of its archaeological heritage and, by so doing, ensured that it can be enjoyed today.”
Sarah McHugh, Museum & Heritage Manager at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, commented:
“We’re delighted to hold this event in partnership with the National Trust’s Castle Coole, with support from the Friends of Fermanagh County Museum. It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear Dr O’Conor speak about Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry and her continuing legacy, particularly the importance of preserving heritage of local, national, and international significance for future generations.”
Rona McKnight, Collections & House Manager for the National Trust in Fermanagh, added:
“We’re thrilled to partner with our colleagues at Fermanagh County Museum to present this talk and shine a brighter light on Lady Dorothy’s life and her contributions across Ulster. As a key figure in the history of Castle Coole, she produced the first in-depth assessment of its construction and furnishings—an invaluable resource that continues to deepen our understanding of the house and its historic interiors.”
