Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has launched its new Age Friendly Strategy 2026–2030, setting out how the district will support older people to live healthy, active and connected lives.

The Strategy aims to make the district a more inclusive, accessible and supportive place for older residents. It has been shaped by the views of local people and is based on the World Health Organisation’s eight Age Friendly themes.

The strategy has been led by the Age Friendly Alliance, chaired by the Council’s Chief Executive. The Alliance brings together a wide range of organisations including the Public Health Agency, Western Health and Social Care Trust, the Police Service of NI, NI Fire and Rescue Service, Ni Housing Executive, Libraries NI, the Dept of Infrastructure, Translink and the local Age Sector Network – South West Age Partnership.

To help develop the strategy, a district-wide survey was carried out alongside several focus groups. This ensured that the voices and experiences of older people were central to the plan.

The Age Friendly Strategy is very important as the district’s population is aging quickly, with 18% of residents currently aged 65 or over with this expected to rise by 28% by 2030.

People are living longer, but not always in good health. This means many people spend their later years managing illness or disability. Poverty affects more than 1 in 5 residents, with older people particularly at risk of fuel and food poverty. This can impact health, mobility, independence and mental wellbeing. These challenges mean it is more important than ever to plan ahead and ensure the district is a place where older people feel safe, supported and valued.

The Strategy focuses on four key areas:

  • Infrastructure – improving outdoor spaces, buildings, transport and housing.
  • Participation and Access – supporting community activities, volunteering and clear information.
  • Tackling Isolation – reducing loneliness and promoting safety and inclusion.
  • Health and Wellbeing – supporting dementia awareness, falls prevention and poverty reduction.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr Barry McElduff, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, said:

“Our older residents are a vital part of community life. This Strategy shows our commitment to supporting people to live well, stay connected and feel valued as they age. By working together with partners and local communities, we can build a community that is truly age friendly.”

The Age Friendly Strategy 2026–2030 provides a clear and practical plan to help older people across Fermanagh and Omagh District to live healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.
