January 1922

6th

Over 20 IRA officers attending a meeting in Dromore are arrested.

7th

The Dáil approves the Treaty by 64 votes to 57.

9th

De Valera resigns as President.

14th

The ‘Monaghan Footballers’ are arrested by the USC en route to a game in Derry. Among those detained is Dan Hogan, OC of the 5th Northern Division and brother of Michael who was killed on Bloody Sunday.

16th

British formally hand over power to Collins and the Provisional Government at a Dublin Castle ceremony.

21st

Craig and Collins meet in London and agree a pact: 1) to end the Belfast Boycott, 2) to arrange a return to employment for the expelled shipyard workers, 3) to replace the Boundary Commission with an agreement between the Belfast and Dublin governments.

February 1922

2nd

The Craig-Collins Pact collapses following a meeting
between the 2 men at Dublin Castle when a row breaks out over the future of the border. Craig insists ‘not an inch’ of Ulster soil will be handed over, while Collins demands the transfer of Tyrone and Fermanagh to the South.

7th

Under O’Duffy’s orders the IRA kidnap around 70 Loyalists in Tyrone and Fermanagh, holding them in Monaghan.

11th

The IRA attack a train carrying USC members at Clones railway station. The attack leaves 4 Special Constables dead. Matt Fitzpatrick, the local IRA commander is also killed. The attack sparks a new wave of violence in Belfast.

16th

Speaking in the House of Commons, Churchill makes his famous reference to ‘the dreary steeples of Fermanagh and Tyrone’.

17th

The Provisional Government agrees to pay the salaries of teachers who refuse to recognise the North’s Department of Education.

March 1922

20th

Samuel Laird, an off-duty B Special is shot dead at his home in Trillick. Two days later another B Special is killed and before the end of the week 3 nationalists are shot dead in the village in retaliation.

23rd

Five members of the McMahon family and one of their employees are murdered in their Belfast home. Rumours circulate of USC involvement in the killings.

28th

An audacious raid is carried out on Belcoo Barracks by an IRA detachment under the command of Sean MacEoin. Arms are seized and 17 police officers are taken prisoner.

30th

The second Craig-Collins Pact is announced following a meeting in London, but it fails to end violence in the North.

31st

The shooting of 2 USC officers in Belfast unleashes yet more violence which claims the lives of 10 civilians, 8 of whom are Catholics.

April 1922

5th

The Royal Ulster Constabulary is formed.

7th

The Special Powers Act is approved by the Belfast Parliament.

14th

The anti-Treaty IRA occupy the Four Courts in Dublin.

21st

A meeting of the IRA’s Ulster Council in Clones, under the direction of Michael Collins, makes preparations to begin a new wave of coordinated attacks in the North.

26th

Republicans kill 14 Protestants over a 4-day period in what becomes known as the Bandon Valley killings.

May 1922

20th

News of the Collins – de Valera election pact is made public. This infuriates the Craig government.

22nd

William Twaddell, the Westminster MP for West Belfast, is shot dead in the city centre in part of a series of coordinated actions by the IRA.

23rd

The authorities intern 202 suspects following early morning arrests – 63 in Tyrone and 30 in Fermanagh.

Craig rejects any role for the Boundary Commission in a speech to the Belfast parliament: ‘What we have now, we hold’.

The Provisional Government endorses a policy of ‘peaceful obstruction’ towards the Belfast government.

Republican forces are driven out of the Belleek-Pettigo triangle by a joint USC/British Army force using artillery.

The elections for the third Dáil return 58 pro-Treaty and 36 anti-Treaty TDs.

17th

Joseph Caldwell is kidnapped by the IRA shortly after boarding the Derry train in Omagh.

17th

The IRA carry out the killing of 6 Protestant civilians at Altnaveigh near Newry.

20th

Cahir Healy is interned on the Argenta, a prison ship moored in Belfast Lough.

22nd

Sir Henry Wilson, a newly elected Unionist MP and security adviser to the Belfast government, is shot dead outside his London home.

28th

The Irish Civil War begins when Provisional Government forces attack the Four Courts in Dublin.

July 1922

5th

Cathal Brugha makes his own blood sacrifice when he is shot down while resisting arrest after the surrender of his garrison in Dublin.

5th

The Local Government Bill completes its passage through the Belfast Parliament. PR is abolished in local government elections and constituency boundaries are redrawn.

12th

Speaking at a Twelfth demonstration in Irvinestown, James Cooper (MP) pays a tribute to the efforts made by the USC in Tyrone and Fermanagh ‘in the cause of peace’.

August 1922

9th

Ernest Blythe, the acting Minister of Home Affairs, warns his Dáil cabinet colleagues that Unionists must be won over by persuasion, as both the use of force and the economic boycott have been counter-productive.

10th

Free State troops capture Cork city from the anti-Treaty IRA.

12th

Arthur Griffith dies suddenly from a stroke.

19th

The Provisional Government formally endorses a peace policy with ‘North-East Ulster’.

A Special Constable sustains a gunshot wound in Dromore.

W.T. Cosgrave becomes Chairman of the Provisional Government.

September 1922

7th

Unionist ratepayers in Omagh meet to protest against the appointment of 2 doctors at the Tyrone and Fermanagh Asylum which they consider to be an unwarranted and unnecessary burden on the rates.

11th

After delaying for 2 months the British government finally allows the Local Government Bill to receive the royal assent.

13th

Sean Milroy warns the Dáil that the Local Government Act will have grave consequences for Tyrone and Fermanagh.

October 1922

14th

Cosgrave establishes the North-Eastern Boundary Bureau under the chairmanship of Kevin O’Shiel to deal with all issues pertaining to the North.

15th

The Public Safety Bill gives wide powers to military courts in the South.

19th

An attempt is made at Enniskillen court to have Cahir Healy disqualified as an election candidate on the grounds of non-residence. At the time Healy was interned.

23rd

Andrew Bonar Law becomes Prime Minister.

25th

The Viceroy pays a visit to Enniskillen.

31st

The Provisional Government discontinues the policy of paying teachers’ salaries, encouraging Catholic-controlled schools to negotiate with the North’s Ministry of Education.

November 1922

15th

T.J.S. Harbison and Cahir Healy win the 2 Fermanagh and Tyrone seats in the Westminster General Election.

17th

A crowd of Unionist supporters demonstrate outside homes in Omagh’s Campsie Avenue, whose occupants failed to vote in the General Election.

Four Dublin Republicans are executed as the Provisional Government adopts a more ruthless approach.

December 1922

6th

Cosgrave argues that the recent General Election result in Fermanagh and Tyrone will influence the Boundary Commission when it is established to adjust the border.

6th

The Irish Free State Constitution comes into force.

7th

The Belfast Parliament formally votes to be excluded from the jurisdiction of the Irish Free State. In his address Craig is adamant that his government will take nothing to do with the Boundary Commission.

8th

In response to the killing of West Cork TD, Sean Hales, the Provisional Government executes 4 senior Republican prisoners, Rory O’Connor, Liam Mellows, Joseph McKelvey and Richard Barrett, one from each province.

29th

A great demonstration is held to welcome the Duke of Abercorn, the new Governor-General of Northern Ireland, when he arrives at Omagh railway station.
