Step back in time and experience the Marble Arch Caves as they were first explored in 1895. Guided only by candlelight and lanterns, this immersive tour recreates the pioneering journey of Édouard-Alfred Martel, the renowned explorer and founder of modern speleology who carried out the first recorded scientific exploration of the cave system.

With the electric lights switched off, you’ll venture through the cave in near-total darkness, following in Martel’s footsteps as he navigated this underground world more than 130 years ago. Along the way, you’ll discover the techniques and challenges of early cave exploration, from measuring passages with rope and determining cave depths to illuminating vast chambers and tracing the flow of underground water.

Led by experienced cave guide and storyteller Sean Corrigan, this engaging re-enactment brings Martel’s remarkable discoveries to life. Through fascinating stories and hands-on demonstrations, you’ll gain a unique insight into the ingenuity, determination and adventure that shaped the exploration of the Marble Arch Caves.

Each participant will be provided with a candle or lantern for the journey.
