Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is strengthening its commitment to tourism and destination marketing across the Fermanagh and Omagh District and the Fermanagh Lakelands and Omagh and the Sperrins visitor destinations.
From 01 January 2026, the tourism marketing function, currently delivered by Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism on behalf of the Council, will be delivered by the Council, with the Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism team becoming Council employees, ensuring continuity of expertise and strong industry relationships.
This move reflects the Council’s commitment to development of the District as a world class sustainable and regenerative tourism destination and to continued work with partners to deliver the tourism strategy for the District – the 2022-2032 Visitor Experience Development Plan (VEDP) for Fermanagh Lakelands and Omagh and the Sperrins.
For over 30 years, Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism played a pivotal role in promoting the Fermanagh Lakelands and, more recently, Omagh and the Sperrins as must-visit destinations. Working in partnership with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, the organisation delivered innovative marketing campaigns, forged strong relationships with the local tourism industry and attracted visitors from near and far. The Council is committed to this collaborative approach and to building on these achievements.
Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff, said:
“This is a significant and positive development that reflects the Council’s commitment to tourism and destination marketing.
The Council’s ambition, along with that of its partners, is to develop the District as a world-class, sustainable and regenerative tourism destination where visitors enjoy our rich natural and cultural heritage.
The destination marketing function will play an important role, amplifying our visitor message, engaging target audiences, local industry and partners.
I would like to thank the Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism Board and staff for their dedication and collaborative spirit throughout this process. We look forward to building on the achievements of the past and delivering a bold, inclusive vision for tourism in 2026 and beyond.”
Chair of Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:
“Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism has been instrumental in showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Fermanagh Lakelands and Omagh and the Sperrins. Through innovative marketing campaigns and strong partnerships with local businesses, we have successfully attracted visitors from across the globe and supported the growth of the wider tourism industry.
As we enter this new chapter with the Council, we look forward to building on this and advancing our shared vision of a sustainable and regenerative tourism destination that benefits both businesses and communities. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism team and Board for their dedication and professionalism throughout the years.”
The move of the destination marketing function into the Council will also complement the recent announcement by the Economy Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, that Co. Fermanagh will now be included within Fáilte Ireland’s ‘Hidden Heartlands’ regional brand.
“This is a significant development that will strengthen the tourism profile of our District and deliver long-term benefits for local communities and businesses,” said Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff.
The Council has actively lobbied the Minister for this inclusion, recognising the importance of strong branding in attracting visitors and investment. The inclusion of Fermanagh within this brand will not only elevate the Fermanagh Lakelands but will also create new opportunities for Omagh and the Sperrins, encouraging visitors to explore the full breadth of what our District has to offer,” he added.
