Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Hosts Irish Language Careers Fair
17th October 2025
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council hosted an Irish Language Careers Fair on Thursday 9 October 2025, held simultaneously at Omagh Leisure Complex and Fermanagh House in Enniskillen.
The event welcomed over 150 students from six local secondary schools: Loreto Grammar School Omagh, Dean Maguirc College Carrickmore, Sacred Heart College Omagh, Christian Brothers Grammar School Omagh, St Michael’s College Enniskillen, and Mount Lourdes Grammar School Enniskillen. The fair aimed to showcase the diverse career opportunities available to Irish Language speakers.
Students were greeted by Mark Harte, a local Irish Language speaker, commentator, and Irish Language Development Officer at Queen’s University Belfast. He shared insights into how the Irish Language has shaped his professional journey and opened doors throughout his career.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a range of Irish Language organisations including Conradh na Gaeilge, Glór na nGael, Galway University, An Comhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta, Pobal ar a’n Iúl, Sruth na hÉirne, Todd’s Leap, and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
Councillor Barry McElduff, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, who attended the event, offered a reflection on the importance of supporting young people, saying:
“This was an excellent careers fair where young people gained some insight into possible career paths and future opportunities associated with their learning of Irish. There was great positivity in the room and a lot of optimism for the future. Learning Irish opens many doors and helps us to understand the world around us.
And, as they say, ‘mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí’ – Praise the youth and they will flourish”
