Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has marked another successful Positive Ageing Month this October with nearly 300 of our older residents taking part in a wide range of events designed to promote wellbeing, connection and active ageing.

Organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with South West Age Partnership and supported by the Western Health and Social Care Trust and the Public Health Agency, the initiative brought together organisations and individuals committed to enrich the lives of older people.

The 2025 theme“Building Belonging – Celebrating the Power of Our Social Connections,” highlighted the importance of community, friendship and inclusion in later life. Throughout the month, participants enjoyed a varied and vibrant including tea dances, creative workshops, local history talks, fitness sessions, free swims, scam awareness workshops and digital inclusion events.

Older people had an opportunity to directly engage with some of their Elected Members at a Local Democracy Event in the Grange, Omagh. Participants learnt about the role of the Council and heard how their Councillors lobby for them on an ongoing basis.

Positive Ageing Month closed with an event in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh finishing on a high note with songs from local historian and singer Declan Forde. Participants were also inspired by Anthea McWilliams, dancer and author of Born to Prance, who actively celebrates ageing.

Speaking about Positive Ageing Month Cllr Barry McElduff, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, commented:

“Positive Ageing Month reminds us that ageing is really about growing together. The events this October have shown the incredible strength and spirit of our older residents, and we are proud to celebrate their ongoing contributions to our community.”
