FEAR 26 challenges competitors across the stunning landscapes of West Fermanagh

The Fermanagh Endurance Adventure Race (FEAR) took place on Saturday 26 September in the scenic surroundings of Derrygonnelly, in the heart of the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Geopark.
The multi-discipline event, featuring trail running, road cycling and kayaking, challenged participants over two courses: a long course of 74 km and a short course of 35 km.
Starting and finishing at Derrygonnelly Community Centre, competitors navigated iconic Geopark sites, including the hills of Knockmore, Big Dog Forest, Blackslee Forest, Lough Navar viewpoint and cliff path, and the Magho shoreline of Lower Lough Erne, before finishing through Garrison village.
Prizes for the fastest male and female competitors in various age categories, as well as team awards, were presented by the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Debbie Coyle.
Speaking following the successful event, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Debbie Coyle said: “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to everyone who has taken part in this year’s FEARmanagh event.
“FEAR was developed by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to showcase Derrygonnelly and the wider West Fermanagh area, encouraging visitors to discover its dramatic and breathtaking landscapes while taking on the excitement and challenge of adventure sport.
“Sincere thanks must go to the many local volunteers and emergency services who have given their time, expertise and support to ensure that events like this can take place safely and successfully.
“I hope everyone has enjoyed a memorable day at this year’s event and that they will return to explore and experience the stunning landscapes of this beautiful part of our district.”
FEAR 2026 was delivered in partnership with the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark and was supported by emergency and rescue services, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Irish Mountain Rescue.
The event was sponsored for the second year in a row by Monaghan Brothers, Lisnaskea. This sponsorship highlighted their robust Isuzu vehicle range, which reflects the endurance and capability demanded by the FEARmanagh challenge.
The event was also made possible with the support of the Derrygonnelly and District Community Partnership, Derrygonnelly Community Centre and the wider local community.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, FEAR continues to lead by example. In 2023, the Council introduced a range of eco-friendly initiatives under its ‘Greening our Event’ campaign, aimed at reducing environmental impact.
These efforts continued in 2026, with participants encouraged to support this mission by embracing responsible and sustainable practices.
