Enniskillen Castle Welcomes “The Nook” – A Historic Gift with Artistic Legacy
29th September 2025
Fermanagh County Museum at Enniskillen Castle has announced the installation of “The Nook”, a carved wooden arch donated by the Trimble family, founders and long-time publishers of The Impartial Reporter. The arch was originally commissioned in the early 1900s for the Trimble residence above the newspaper’s offices in Enniskillen.
Crafted by local woodcarver John Scott and gilded by his grandson William Scott, who later became an internationally recognised artist, the arch is now permanently located at Enniskillen Castle, framing the entrance to the Castle Walkway.
The installation coincides with the extended exhibition “The Impartial Reporter 1825–2025: Reporting 200 Years of History Through the Archives”, which is on display at Enniskillen Castle until 8 November 2025.
To mark the occasion, the museum will host ‘Around the Town, Around the Table’ on Friday, 3 October 2025, from 1:30 to 5:30 pm.
This afternoon event explores the many historic connections linking the arch, the artist, the exhibition and the town. The tour begins at Enniskillen Castle and continues through the town’s artistic and journalistic legacy, followed by afternoon tea and a screening of Every Picture Tells a Story (1984), a film by James Scott about his father William’s early life in Enniskillen.
A cost of £20 per person includes afternoon tea, tour and film screening – booking is essential. Visit www.enniskillencastle.co.uk or call +44 (0)28 6632 5000.
