Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark Leads the Way with 2026 Tourism Business Sustainability Training Programme
18th February 2026
Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark proudly celebrated the achievements of tourism businesses from across the region last week as 11 businesses completed the 2026 Tourism Business Sustainability Training Programme. The initiative, a first of its kind on the island of Ireland, equips businesses with the knowledge and tools needed to strengthen environmental practices, enhance community impact, and contribute to a more sustainable tourism offer across the region.
Speaking at the event, Councillor John Paul Feeley, Chair of the Geopark Committee, said:
“I commend each business for its dedication to learning and its clear commitment to environmental stewardship. By joining this network, you are becoming part of a group that is already recognised as a leader in sustainable and regenerative tourism. Your contribution will strengthen that leadership even further. Together, you will play a vital role in shaping a tourism sector that supports thriving businesses, resilient communities, and a healthy landscape for generations to come.”
Councillor Anthony Feely, Vice Chair of the Geopark Committee, added:
“Through this cross-border collaboration between Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Cavan County Council, Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark continues to demonstrate best practice in sustainable development. The support provided by Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland, and both Councils is invaluable in empowering businesses to embrace continuous learning and collective climate action.”
The programme is a real collaborative effort. Devised in Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, the programme is funded by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cavan County Council, Tourism NI and Fáilte Ireland and delivered by The Tourism Space. The 14‑week programme covered a diverse range of practical topics, including Energy and water efficiency, Waste reduction, Biodiversity and nature protection, Accessibility and inclusion, Leave No Trace principles, Community engagement and, Storytelling and collaborative marketing.
Maria McAlister, Interim Manager – NI Experience Brand Development Tourism NI, commented at the ceremony, “We in Tourism NI are delighted to support this programme. Each business is leading by example and a beacon of inspiration. As the network here grows from strength to strength, so does our destination, quietly and meaningfully”.
Sarah McCarthy, Regional Development Officer, Irelands Hidden Heartlands with Fáilte Ireland, echoed these thoughts saying “This programme demonstrates real momentum building across the Upper Shannon, Shannon Erne, and Border Area. By giving tourism businesses the tools and confidence to lead on sustainability, the programme directly supports our vision for the Destination, a vision based on regenerative principles that will underpin a vibrant, low-carbon and highly innovative regional tourism economy.”
Businesses completing the 2026 programme will now join the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark Regenerative Tourism Business Network, a dynamic group of more than 40 businesses dedicated to advancing sustainable and regenerative tourism. Members benefit from shared learning, collaborative marketing, peer support, and a recognised commitment to sustainable business practices that set them apart as leaders in this field.
