Council Vice Chair hosts reception to mark the Armstrong family and Richard Lyons’ contribution to community life in Beragh
29th May 2026
Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Shirley Hawkes, recently hosted a reception at The Grange, Omagh to celebrate the Armstrong family and Richard Lyons and their incredible contribution to community life in Beragh.
Speaking at the reception, the Vice Chair said:
“As Vice-Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, I am delighted to welcome you all here to The Grange in Omagh for this special reception, as we celebrate the Armstrong family and Richard Lyons and their incredible contribution to community life in Beragh.
The Armstrong family have been at the very heart of community life in Beragh for many years. From their roots on the main street, to owning Farley’s pub, they have always been deeply connected to the area. Perhaps one of the most meaningful contributions is the land on which Beragh Swifts Football Club stands today, generously provided by the Armstrong family.
That gesture alone says so much about their generosity and their commitment to their community. It reflects a deep love for Beragh and a genuine desire to bring people together. Because of that kindness, so many individuals have had the chance to take part in sport, build friendships, and get involved in the community.
I would now like to take a moment to recognise some members of the family individually.
First, Mervyn, someone who is truly at the heart of the football club. Whether it is marking pitches, carrying out repairs, or simply making sure everything runs smoothly on match day, Mervyn is always there. His involvement began as a player, and over the years that commitment has never faded. The club simply would not be what it is today without him.
I would also like to thank Clarence Armstrong, who played at senior level for the club and was also involved in the Pride of the Village Flute Band. Clarence, your contribution across both sport and music really shows the depth of your involvement in the community, and the strong connection your family has to Beragh. You have given your time so generously, and it is very much appreciated.
And finally, Nigel Armstrong. Nigel helped to found the Pride of the Village Flute Band, which is celebrating a fantastic 40 years this year. He is still actively involved today and has taught so many new members over the years. Nigel, your dedication has helped keep that tradition alive and given so many people the chance to be part of something special.
I would now like to turn to another very deserving individual, Richard Lyons.
Richard has dedicated almost 30 years of his life to Beragh Swifts FC and the wider community. Starting as a player in 1996, his playing career was sadly cut short following a serious car accident in 2000. But instead of stepping away, Richard’s contribution to the club only strengthened. He moved into management, coaching reserve and Under-18 teams before becoming First Team Manager, and also taking on the role of Club Secretary. Then in 2008, he became Chairman, a position he still holds today.
Under Richard’s leadership, the club has gone from strength to strength, both on and off the pitch. From improving facilities, to developing youth pathways, to strengthening links within the community. Your resilience, dedication and vision have helped shape Beragh Swifts into the strong, community-focused club it is today. The opportunities it now provides for people of all ages are a credit to your hard work.
As a Council, we are committed to building a shared, inclusive and welcoming district, everyone here this evening plays a part in that. By giving your time, your energy and your passion, you are strengthening community life and inspiring others to get involved.
On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, thank you all for being here tonight. Events like this are so important, they give us the chance to recognise the people who make our communities what they are. And each of you here is a wonderful example of that. You represent the very best of the district, and I look forward to seeing Beragh continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.”
