On Friday 23 May 2025, over 130 young people from Fermanagh and Omagh were recognised for their significant achievements and the contribution they make to the District.
The reception, hosted by the Council Chair, Councillor John McClaughry, and Council Vice Chair, Councillor Elaine Brough, took place in Strule Arts Centre, Omagh.
The young people were recognised for achievements in a variety of categories including volunteering, charity, public speaking, dancing, drama, athletics, football, Gaelic football, gymnastics, swimming, mini bikes, motocross, netball and table tennis.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and a series of events are taking place to recognise the exceptional contribution of local communities, Elected Members and Staff. The annual Young Achievers’ event is an opportunity to recognise the outstanding young people whose achievements have brought pride and distinction to the District. This year’s event is included as one of a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary.
Speaking at the Young Achievers’ event, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor John McClaughry, said:
“This event is an opportunity for us to shine a light on you, our young people, and the success you have achieved as well as the positive contribution you have all made in our District.
I would also like to congratulate all the young people which have exceeded their own personal goals.
Young people face many challenges, particularly in today’s society, and you also have school, work and personal commitments competing for your time. This makes your achievements even more commendable. You have shown great determination and resilience to succeed and you truly are an inspiration to many of us and other young people.
It is important that we recognise our young people because you are the future of our District and by supporting and encouraging you we can create strong and resilient communities and perhaps future leaders.
I congratulate each and every young achiever. You have done yourselves, your family and friends, your school, your club and your District proud.”
Encouraging the young people and recognising their talents, the Chair add:“Walt Disney once said: “Some dream, some do it, some do both.” You are part of special group who have achieved both as you have all dreamed of achieving success and you have went on to do that.”
A new nomination format was used for this year’s Young Achievers’ event and the Council would like to thank all those who took time to submit nominations. Nominations for the 2025-2026 Young Achievers’ event will open in January 2026.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to ensuring that our young people have the best start in life and lifelong opportunities to fulfil their potential. Young Achievers provides an opportunity to encourage our young people to achieve this outcome.
