Council Illuminates Enniskillen Castle and Strule Arts Centre, Omagh for Key October Awareness Events

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will illuminate Enniskillen Castle and Strule Arts Centre, Omagh in a series of symbolic colours throughout October 2025 to mark several important awareness campaigns and commemorative events.
Wednesday 1st October 2025 – Purple for International Day of Older People
To mark International Day of Older People, both buildings will be illuminated in purple. This year’s theme, Building Belonging, highlights the importance of social connection at every age. Older people play a vital role in strengthening community bonds across generations. October is also Positive Ageing Month, with free events across the District including ‘Chat -Tea – Dances’. Sunday 12th October 2025 – Blue for World Arthritis Day
The buildings will shine blue for World Arthritis Day, a global awareness initiative to educate about the impact of arthritis, symptoms, healthcare challenges, prevention, and treatment options. Versus Arthritis, a leading charity, is developing breakthrough treatments and supporting people with arthritis through peer support, advice, and information.
Friday 17th October 2025 – Purple for DLD Day (Developmental Language Disorder Day)
Illuminated in purple, this day raises awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a hidden but common condition affecting communication. The Western Health & Social Care Trust’s Speech and Language Therapy Department is highlighting the importance of understanding and supporting those with DLD.
Saturday 18th October 2025 – Red for Black History Month
Both buildings will be lit red to mark Black History Month, in partnership with the North West Migrants Forum. This annual event celebrates the impact of black heritage and culture in the UK and encourages everyone to challenge racism and promote inclusion. The ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign’s annual Wear Red Day is Friday, 17th October.
Monday 20th October 2025 – Purple for GloWeek (Child Brain Injury Trust)
As the nights draw in and the clocks change, GloWeek aims to raise awareness of road safety and the risk of brain injury. The Child Brain Injury Trust supports families and professionals across the UK, providing practical and emotional support after a child acquires a brain injury. GloWeek runs from 20th–26th October, encouraging everyone to “be seen, not hurt.” Both buildings will be illuminated in purple.
Thursday 24th October 2025 – Blue for the United Nations 80th Anniversary
Finally, both buildings will be shine blue to mark the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations. This special illumination recognises eight decades of the UN’s work in promoting peace, human rights, and international cooperation across the globe. The anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s achievements and ongoing efforts to build a safer, fairer, and more sustainable world for all.
