Chair of the Council, Councillor Barry McElduff, visited the Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex for a walkthrough to acknowledge the facility’s significant contribution to health and social care across the Western Trust area.

During the visit, Councillor McElduff met with staff and toured a number of key departments, each playing a vital role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care to communities across West Tyrone and County Fermanagh.

The visit covered a wide range of key clinical areas within the facility, beginning with the Cardiac Assessment Unit, which provides urgent and specialist assessment to approximately 9,000 patients each year.

Councillor McElduff also spent time in the Urgent Care and Treatment Centre, where around 22,000 people receive essential unscheduled care annually.

He later visited the Treatment Rooms, a busy service delivering up to 200 outpatient appointments every day, amounting to more than 50,000 appointments per year.

The tour continued through the Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Wards, where staff provide compassionate and tailored support to patients with complex needs. The Chair also met teams within the Day Procedure Unit and Theatres, which accommodate a wide range of planned surgical and clinical procedures in a modern and safe environment.

Speaking after the visit Chair of the Council, Cllr Barry McElduff said,

“The visit today highlighted the vital role that the Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex plays within the wider health system and reaffirmed its position as a highly valued asset for the Western Trust area.

The strong alignment between the hospital and the surrounding community‑based services is central to shaping and supporting the Western Trust’s developing Vision for Health and Care Futures for Fermanagh and West Tyrone.

The visit underscored the Council’s continued commitment to supporting accessible, high‑quality healthcare for local people and to working collaboratively with the Western Trust as it plans for the future needs of the region.”

Dr Maura O’Neill, Director of Community & Older Peoples Services, commented:

“We are delighted with the visit to our Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex as it has provided the opportunity to showcase the fantastic range of services here. Many of these services are Community Services which are helping to support people in staying at home longer and avoiding lengthy stays in an acute hospital setting. These include Rapid Response, our Treatment Rooms, Reablement Service and Palliative Care. This has provided us with a chance to hear first hard from our amazing staff and to thank them for the wonderful work they do every day in helping all those who need our services. This visit has been important to highlight the continued collaborative work with the Trust, our Council colleagues and the public as we build towards the development of a wider vision for Health and Social care in the area”

Mark Gillespie, Director of Surgery, Paediatrics & Women’s Health, added:

“This important visit to Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex has been very important to emphasise the breadth of health and social care services we offer in the Fermanagh and Omagh area. We welcome the Council’s continued interest and this visit by the Chair and Chief Executive has provided the opportunity for our staff to highlight the innovative work and services we offer for all our patients both in our excellent facilities but also in helping them continue to receive care in their homes. It was great to hear from our staff in the Cardiac Assessment Unit, a service which leads the way in nurse-led services in the Western Trust where they see over 9,000 people per year. We also visited the fantastic Urgent Care and Treatment Centre which plays such an integral role in the delivery of urgent treatment and care for over 22000 patients each year whilst we also had the opportunity to hear about the excellent role which our Day Procedure Unit and Theatres play in delivering a range of operating procedures for the Trust and region. We were all very taken by the levels of compassion and commitment shown by all our Omagh staff in their delivery of care to all patients and we thank them for this”.
