Chair Of FODC Cllr Barry McElduff with young people

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff, hosted a reception on Thursday 11 September at the Townhall, Enniskillen to mark the successes of four young people from Fermanagh and Omagh.

Speaking at the event, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Barry McElduff said,

‘As Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I am delighted to join you all here this evening in the Townhall, Enniskillen to celebrate the outstanding achievements of four remarkable young individuals from our District. This event is an opportunity for us to shine a light on you, our young people, and the success you have achieved as well as the positive contribution you have made to our District.

Young people today face many challenges, with school, work, and personal commitments all competing for their time and energy. That’s why your achievements are especially commendable. You’ve demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience in reaching your goals, and you truly are an inspiration to us all. I have no doubt that these qualities, along with your motivation and talents will continue to serve you well in your future studies, career, and beyond.

It is my great pleasure to begin this celebration by recognising the incredible success of James Morrison who represented the UK and Ireland, as Captain of the British and Irish team, at the World Angus Youth Challenge in Australia. This has been described by James as a lifechanging experience one filled with invaluable lessons, lifelong friendships and cherished memories.

From climbing the Harbour Bridge in Sydney to on the spot media questions in Bathurst, James consistently showcased his remarkable composure and readiness to meet every challenge head-on.

James and the team’s impressive skills and knowledge were clearly showcased during the wide range of competitive activity from clipping and grooming cattle, to Brahman carcase judging, public speaking, and debate. James undoubtedly distinguished himself among strong competitors, achieving an impressive fifth place overall in stock judging, with his team also triumphing as champions in the debate competition.

Another defining moment in James’ journey was receiving the prestigious ‘Spirit of Angus’ award, which recognised him as the top competitor among 48 participants. This award is testament to James’ unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership and infectious enthusiasm. You led your team with integrity, determination and a clear vision and for that you should be very proud.

From one remarkable individual to another, we now recognise the incredible success of Jack McGonigle.

Jack is a dedicated young athlete whose passion for sport has led to remarkable achievements. After excelling in rugby and running, Jack chose to focus on boxing, training intensely four times a week. He joined Ederney Amateur Boxing Club in 2020 and has shown unwavering commitment, even training during holidays.

In January 2025, upon turning 11, Jack began competing and quickly made his mark by winning the Fermanagh & Tyrone, Mid Ulster, and Ulster Championships. His success culminated in becoming the All-Ireland Champion in the Boy 1, 40kg category at the National Championships in Dublin. This is an outstanding achievement, one made all the more remarkable by the fact that Jack only began competing this year.

To win at every level – local, regional and national is a truly unbelievable achievement. Jack’s strong sense of commitment and discipline are an inspiration to us all. His success is not only a reflection of his talent, but also of the many long hours of training and the unfaltering support of his club, coaches, family, and community.

With such a solid foundation and well-established credentials, Jack is poised to continue breaking new ground in the sport. Whether he’s stepping into the ring or inspiring others outside of it, Jack reflects the essence of resilience and determination. We can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next.
It’s clear that talent runs deep in our District, next, we recognise Mia Deane and Gracie Curtis who were both selected for the All-Girl Senior Elite Cheerleading Team for 2025 which would lead to them to competing at the International Cheer Union World Championships in Orlando Florida in April 2025.

Team Ireland All Girl Senior Elite team achieved 7th place which was the highest Ireland have ever achieved. The Team then competed in the ICU Cheer Cup where they got 2nd place and came home with a Silver Medal which was an amazing achievement.
Competing at such a high level demanded exceptional commitment and sustained effort. The girls committed to monthly two-day team training sessions, often travelling to either Galway or Belfast, with only a few training sessions held locally here in Enniskillen. Balancing this demanding schedule alongside their schoolwork and part-time jobs as gymnastics coaches called for meticulous time management. Their commitment extended beyond training, as they also took the initiative to organise team fundraisers to help cover the costs of competing in Florida – further demonstrating their drive and passion for the sport.

Mia and Gracie have been cheerleading for nearly 10 years, competing in both cheerleading and gymnastic competitions throughout Ireland. Both girls have been committed members of two local clubs, Jets Cheerleading and Bridge Gymnastics in Enniskillen and both clubs were delighted that these local girls were selected to represent Ireland at one of the most prestigious cheerleading events.

This year Gracie continues to Cheer with Jets Cheerleading Enniskillen while completing her A-levels and Mia is off to Northumbria University to study Sport & Exercise Science and is keen to continue Cheerleading at University.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to ensuring that our young people have the best start in life and lifelong opportunities to fulfil their potential. Events like this help us to show how proud we are of your achievements and encourage you to continue to aspire to achieve your dreams.

I would like to take a moment to thank the parents, guardians and coaches for giving these young people the opportunity to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. Your encouragement, dedication and commitment of time has made this journey possible.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, I would like to again congratulate each and every one of you on your achievements. You have done yourselves, your family and friends, your school, your club and your District proud. I would encourage you to continue to work hard, achieve your best and I wish you every success for the future.
