Band Chair's Reception

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Debbie Coyle, recently welcomed members of Loughkillygreen Accordion Band to the Townhall, Enniskillen, to recognise their centenary year.

Speaking at the welcome the Chair said,
”Good evening everyone, I am delighted to join you today to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone, the 100th anniversary of Loughkillygreen Accordion Band.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I would like to congratulate everyone associated with the band, past and present, on reaching this centenary year. A hundred years is a significant achievement and one that very few organisations can claim. It is a milestone that speaks of dedication, commitment and, most importantly, community. For a century, Loughkillygreen Accordion Band has brought people together through a shared love of music, tradition and fellowship.

The band’s story began in 1926 when it was established as a flute band, started as a local musical initiative has grown into an organisation that has touched the lives of generations of families across this area.

Over the years, the band has evolved and adapted. Membership widened to include women and young people, helping to ensure that the tradition would continue to flourish. The move to accordions in the 1960s marked a new chapter and under the leadership of Band Master Eric Grey, the band developed a strong musical reputation while becoming a familiar presence at community events, parades and competitions.
What stands out throughout the band’s history is the role it has played in bringing people together. Many local families have seen parents, children and relatives proudly performing side by side. Friendships have been formed, skills have been developed and countless memories have been created through involvement in the band.

Like many community organisations, there have been challenges along the way. However, thanks to the commitment of dedicated leaders, members and supporters, the band has continued to thrive. The revival of recent years, led by Band Master Simon Wiggins, demonstrates the determination of the local community to ensure this important part of its heritage continues for future generations.

Today, with a strong membership, modern instruments, a new uniform and enthusiastic community support, Loughkillygreen Accordion Band can look back on a century of achievement with great pride.

As we celebrate tonight, it is fitting that we recognise all those who have contributed to the band’s success over the last hundred years. Whether they served as musicians, band masters, committee members, fundraisers or supporters, each has played a part in this remarkable story.

Congratulations on reaching this historic milestone. May the band continue to bring people together, strengthen community connections and enrich local life for many years to come. Thank you.”
