Council Celebrates Ulster-Scots Heritage Through Unique Cultural Production
2nd October 2026
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is inviting residents and visitors to attend The Unfinished Broadside, a free cultural showcase at the Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence (America 250).
Through an engaging blend of music, drama, song and storytelling, the unique production explores the historic connections between Ulster and America, highlighting the significant contribution of Ulster-Scots people to the formation and development of the United States.
The Unfinished Broadside tells the remarkable story of John Dunlap, the Ulster-born printer of the United States Declaration of Independence. Through a compelling blend of drama, music, song and dance, the production explores the important contribution of Scotland and Ireland, particularly Ulster, to the formation of the United States of America.
Written by Jonathan Burgess, this original musical play follows Dunlap as he races against time to print the Declaration of Independence in 1776, aided by a mysterious visitor from the future. Along the way, audiences are taken on a journey through the shared history and cultural connections linking Ulster, Scotland and North America.
The title refers to the “broadside”, a large sheet of paper printed on one side and commonly used in the eighteenth century to publish newspapers, proclamations and official documents. The “unfinished broadside” reflects the urgency with which the Declaration had to be printed and distributed, while also symbolising the continuing story of democracy and shared heritage.
The event not only highlights these historic connections but also showcases local talent, as audiences will enjoy performances from Loughkillygreen Accordion Band, Irvine Memorial Pipe Band and Fermanagh Tyrone Brass Band, whose contributions will help make the evening a memorable celebration of shared heritage.
Councillor Debbie Coyle, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, said:
“The Unfinished Broadside offers a fascinating insight into the story of John Dunlap and the important role that Ulster people played in the history of the United States. This unique production celebrates the cultural and historical connections between Ulster and America, while showcasing the rich heritage and talent within our own district.
I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to enjoy what promises to be an engaging and entertaining evening of music, drama and storytelling.”
The Unfinished Broadside will take place on Tuesday 13 October 2026 from 7.00pm to 9.30pm at the Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen. Admission is free, but tickets must be booked in advance through the Ardhowen Theatre Box Office on 028 6632 5440 or online at https://ardhowen.com/show/the-unfinished-broadside/.
The event is supported by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council as part of its Good Relations Week 2026 programme.
