Purple Flag accolade for Enniskillen

21st May 2019

Enniskillen has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag quality assurance for the 8th year running in recognition of the town’s thriving evening and night-time economy.

Purple Flag – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – is an international award for towns and cities in recognition of providing a diverse and vibrant mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and well-being of visitors and local residents.

Enniskillen is just one of five towns and cities in Northern Ireland with this quality standard.

Speaking about Enniskillen’s award of Purple Flag status for an 8th year, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton, said:

“We are delighted that Enniskillen has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag once again. Enniskillen town centre has so much to offer with a growing number of restaurants, cafes, events and activities attracting visitors of all ages.

The Council continues to work in partnership with a range of key stakeholders to further enhance Enniskillen’s evening and night-time economy and acknowledges the continued commitment and support of partners and our residents in this most recent accolade for Enniskillen.”

A number of local agencies and organisations including the PSNI, Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), Enniskillen BID and representatives from the business, community and voluntary sector work with the Council to ensure that Enniskillen continues to provide great entertainment, exceptional hospitality and a safe night out for visitors.

In the months ahead there will be numerous events taking place in Enniskillen, helping to further enhance the island town’s evening appeal including the three-day Shoreline Music Festival in August and Festival Lough Erne in September, both of which take place at Enniskillen Castle as well as Cancer Connect NI’s Winter Wonderland at the Buttermarket, Enniskillen.

Four other towns and cities in Northern Ireland currently have Purple Flag status. These are Omagh, also within the Fermanagh and Omagh District; Armagh, Derry/Londonderry and Newry.

The Purple Flag accreditation is run by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM). For further information on the Purple Flag award please visit the relevant section of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s website www.fermanaghomagh.com.
