As part of its programme of events to reflect on the centenary of the foundation of Northern Ireland, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, in partnership with the Rural Community Network, is organising an online conference on Tuesday 22 June 2021 commencing at 10.00 am to coincide with the centenary of the King’s Speech to open the first ever sitting of the parliament of Northern Ireland.

The conference, entitled “The Partition of Ireland and the Formation of Northern Ireland” is free to participants and will look at such topics as the Kings Speech to the opening of the Northern Ireland parliament, the historic first meeting of James Craig and Eamon De Valera in May 1921 and the impact of the partition of Ireland on nationalist and unionist woman.

Speaking about the conference, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson, said;

There is no doubt that the period between 1912 and 1922 featured many seminal moments in our shared history and it is right that we remember them based on historical accuracy, their impact and consequences, and through mutual understanding and respect in the context of an inclusive and accepting society.

The foundation of Northern Ireland is of great historical significance for the people not only of this island but also around the world. This free conference features contributions by some of our foremost historians and academics and I am very much looking forward to this event.”

A highly respected panel of guest speakers has been secured for the conference including noted political historian and broadcaster, Dr Éamon Phoenix, political historian and former Omagh Academy teacher, Dr Russell Rees and Dr Margaret Ward, Academic and Author, who is a lecturer at Queen’s University, Belfast.
