Ethical and Shared Remembering

As part of its programme of events to reflect on the centenary of the foundation of Northern Ireland, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is organising a series of free online discussions looking at the events covering the decade between 1912 and 1922 which greatly shaped the modern history of the island of Ireland.

The programme,  “Ethical and Shared Remembering: Remembering a Decade of Change and Violence 1912-1922”  will explore the key historical events of the decade and will be delivered by The Junction who specialise in consolidating and strengthening community relations.

Speaking about the programme, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson, said;

“the decade between 1912 and 1922 featured many important moments in our shared history and established the basis for the modern history of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is appropriate that we remember them based on historical accuracy, their impact and consequences, and through mutual understanding and respect in the context of an inclusive and accepting society.

The programme will explore the history of that period with particular reference to specific events, delivered through an approach which respects the inherited historical narrative of participants while encouraging open and honest discussion around the events of the time.

I would encourage anyone with an interest in this period of our history to sign up to the programme and participate in all four events.”

The programme is being delivered online over 4 consecutive Thursday afternoons commencing on Thursday 23 September looking at the Home Rule debate and the Solemn Ulster Covenant. To maximise the benefit from the programme, participants are encouraged to take part in all four sessions.

The “Ethical and Shared Remembering: Remembering a Decade of Change and Violence 1912-1922” programme is a precursor for a further 6 session course entitled “Partition; What did it do for us? which follow immediately after.

The programmes are available only to residents of the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book a place on either programme or on both, please contact Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Good Relation section by telephone on 0300 303 1777 or by email at goodrelations@fermanaghomagh.com as soon as possible.

This event has received financial support from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Good Relations programme assisted by The Executive Office.
