Council opens invitation to join the Fermanagh and Omagh Sustainable Food Partnership

20th February 2024

Fermanagh and Omagh Sustainable Food Partnership inaugural meeting

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is seeking to establish a Sustainable Food Partnership for the District and is inviting individuals and organisations from across the food sector to be members.

The inaugural meeting of the Partnership will take place on Wednesday 28 February 2024 at 9.15am in Dromore Sports Complex.

Food is at the heart of some key issues including food poverty to obesity and food waste to climate change, however, it can also provide a source of vital solutions.  The aim of the Sustainable Food Partnership is to develop a vision and action plan to transform the local food landscape and make tangible differences across the entire food system.

To benefit from the expertise we have locally, the Council is inviting individuals and organisations from across the food sector including food producers, distributors, retailers, waste management, food banks, community groups, statutory organisations and consumers to be part of this new initiative.

Speaking about the Sustainable Food Partnership, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“As we are aware, there is a growing trend for sustainable food as people seek to be healthier, protect the environment and ensure natural resources are used effectively and efficiently.

By changing how we produce food and choosing to buy local, we can support sustainable practices and boost our local economy.

I would encourage anyone involved in the food industry and with an interest in sustainable food to join the Partnership.  Together we can help to ensure our residents have access to healthy, tasty and affordable local produce and support our local food businesses.”

The Council is committed to achieving a Net Zero District by 2042 and promoting a sustainable environment as part of its Climate Change and Sustainable Development Strategy.  The establishment of the Sustainable Food Partnership will contribute to the achievement of this and ensure our local economy is thriving, expanding and outward looking.
