Council launches free ladies activity programme

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has launched two new free health and exercise initiatives designed to help women get active.

The free circuits programmes, funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) as part of its Healthy Towns West Programme, under the Making Life Better framework of Empowering Healthy Living, is aimed at women aged 18 years and over who take little or no exercise.

The programmes will start at Hospital Road Community Centre, Omagh on Tuesday 12 January 2021 at 6pm and West End Community Centre, Enniskillen on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 5.30pm with each session lasting 45 minutes.

Speaking about the forthcoming programme, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Chris Smyth, said:

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council recognises and promotes the benefits of leading an active lifestyle which is one of the key themes of the Fermanagh and Omagh Community Plan. The Council is delighted to be working once again in partnership with the PHA to deliver this programme for women.

“Leading an active lifestyle is vital for our physical and mental health and wellbeing particularly in these challenging times through which we are living. It is important that we find time in our increasingly busy lives to incorporate exercise into our lives and avail of opportunities afforded by programmes such as these. I would ask prospective participants to encourage a friend, neighbour or family member to sign up to this opportunity.”

Fiona McCann Health and Wellbeing Senior Officer with the PHA said;

“Circuit training is a great way to get active whilst having fun and socialising.

“It’s important to stay active right throughout our lives, as being physically active can have the positive benefits of; helping maintain your weight, reducing the risk of developing chronic conditions including some cancers and Type 2 diabetes, as well as reducing anxiety and stress.”

Availability on the programme is limited. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis with registration available from Monday 30 November 2020. All participants will be required to complete a pre-exercise questionnaire. Participation on the programme is free of charge.
