Drummee Waste Transfer Station Works Commence

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has commenced works on the construction of a new waste transfer station at Drummee Recycling Centre and Landfill in Enniskillen.

The construction of the new waste transfer station will be done by local firm, McCusker Contracts Ltd. The new facility will improve the Council’s waste and recycling infrastructure and strengthen resilience, enabling residual waste to be safely and securely stored until it is collected for waste treatment.

The new Waste Transfer Station is a key milestone in the planned closure of Drummee Landfill site later in 2024, contributing to Council’s commitments to increase recycling rates and reduce carbon emissions across the District.

Speaking about the project, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“The construction of the waste transfer station at Drummee represents a significant milestone for the Council in terms of its commitment to reduce waste and increase re-use and recycling.

The Council is committed to managing waste in the most environmentally and economically sustainable way.  This development will help to achieve this by increasing capacity to store waste before it is transported for residual waste treatment.

This facility will also contribute to the Council’s commitment to close the operational landfill site at Drummee and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.  In order to minimise adverse environmental effects from waste, the ‘waste hierarchy’ places waste disposal is at the very bottom in terms of the approach to the management of waste.”

The construction of the new waste transfer station supports the Council’s commitments in its Community Plan, Corporate Plan and Climate Change and Sustainable Development Strategy.  The Council is committed to promoting and delivering activities to support the waste hierarchy of reduce, re-use and recycle; reduce waste to landfill; live sustainably; reduce carbon emissions and adapt to Climate Change.

The works are expected to be completed by October 2024 with the Household Recycling Centre, Landfill Site and the existing Waste Transfer Station at Drummee all remaining operational throughout that period.
