Recently the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, hosted a reception for three young people who have been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in August.  Below is a copy of the Chair’s speech from the reception:

Ladies and gentlemen

As Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I am delighted to welcome you all here to The Townhall, Enniskillen for this reception in recognition of three exceptional young people who have been selected to participate in the 25th World Scout Jamboree – Scarlett Murphy, Any McCabe and Molly McAllister.

The World Jamboree takes place every four years in a different host location and this year’s is being held in South Korea with the theme Think Big Dream Wild Act Together.

The Jamboree brings together 40,000 young people from around the world to participate in a wide variety of activities.  The activities are designed to achieve four key objectives – self improvement, capacity building, commitment to world peace and ecology enhancement and acceptance of diversity.

I understand that you had to undergo a rigorous selection process and over the last 18 months you have attended various training camps and undertaken various fundraising activities.  This is a credit to you as you will have been completing this alongside your schoolwork.  This demonstrates your desire to succeed, your commitment to a task and your ability to prioritise – key skills which show your potential to be leaders of the future and inspire other young people.

Your participation in the World Jamboree is important because it will provide you with the opportunity to learn, develop as a person, increase your confidence, gain a deeper understanding of various cultures, equip you with valuable life skills that will help you personally and in your career, and, importantly, make lifelong memories and friends.

I would like to commend each of you on your success of being selected to take part in the World Jamboree and for your commitment to the process so far.  I am confident that you will do yourselves, your families and friends, your organisations and the District proud.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your time in Korea.  In keeping with the theme, I would encourage you to think big and act together with all the other young people to embrace everything that comes your way as this is a once in a lifetime dream opportunity.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, I would like to wish you safe travels and every success for your future.

Thank you.
