To mark Age Without Limits Action Day on Wednesday 20 March 2024, a special event has been organised in Omagh Library. Presented in collaboration with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC), South West Age Partnership and Libraries NI, the event will be both stimulating and engaging.

From 10.30am to 12.00pm, participants will enjoy a quiz including a round of questions on ageism, followed by coffee and conversation. The event will not only foster mental agility through the quiz but will encourage social interaction and give people an opportunity to discuss what it is like to be an older person in the Fermanagh and Omagh district area.

Age Without Limits Action Day is the first national event of its kind, it is a major new anti-ageism campaign from the Centre for Ageing Better. The campaign is calling for everyone to change the way they think about ageing. The Action Day is a chance for individuals and communities, workplaces, friends and families to learn, take action and make a difference.

Dr Carole Easton, Chief Executive at the Centre for Ageing Better, said,
“Our campaign can only grow with the support of organisations and individuals who share our ambition to end ageism. Unlike other protected characteristics, age is universal. Regardless of race, gender, ability, sexual orientation – we are all ageing. Ageism affects everyone.

Our own research indicates that over half of people think older people are less visible in society. I hope as many organisations and individuals as possible can come together on our Action Day to signal their commitment to combat ageism. We must challenge the negative stereotypes in which older people and ageing is portrayed and instead shine a more realistic light on the myriad ways people experience older age.”

Speaking about FODC’s Ageing Without Limits Action Day event, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said,

“I am delighted that the Council and our partners, SWAP and Libraries NI are marking Ageing Without Limits Action Day. The Council is committed to working with others, enabling a sense of togetherness and connectedness, for the betterment of our people and the district.

This event is a wonderful opportunity to shine the light on older people in our district. It will challenge stereotypes associated with ageing and promote understanding and respect. Participants of all ages will benefit from the discussion, fostering a sense of community where everyone can appreciate the richness that comes with the passage of time.”

The event is open to anyone and is free of charge and light refreshments will be served. For further information and to book a place contact the Age Friendly Officer by telephoning: 0300 303 177 or emailing: age.friendly@fermanaghomagh.com
