International Day for People with Disabilities 2020
The Council has organised a series of short, virtual, awareness raising sessions and workshops to celebrate International Day for People with Disabilities.
The theme for this year is ‘not all disabilities are visible’ and the programme of events (which has been funded by the Public Health Agency) will focus on a range of invisible disabilities.
The series of events will commence on Thursday 3 December 2020 and will continue until Thursday 10 December.
The disabilities being profiled (and guest speakers) include:
Mental Health (Thursday 3 December at 10.30am – 12.00noon)
Mental Health During the Pandemic
Delivered by: Professor Siobhan O’Neill (Northern Ireland Mental Health Champion)
The Importance of the Mental Health Charter
Delivered by: Una Wilson (Equality Commission for Northern Ireland)
Brain Injuries (Friday 4 December at 10.30am – 11.30am).
Melanie Bowden (Headway – the brain injury association)
Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Monday 7 December 11.00am – 12.00noon).
‘Overcoming Communication Barriers During Covid-19’
Delivered by: Royal National Institute for Deaf People
Visual Impairments (Monday 7 December 2.00pm – 3.00pm).
Visual Impairment Awareness
Delivered by: Royal National Institute for Blind People
Learning Disability (Tuesday 8 December at 10.45am).
Learning Disability Awareness
Delivered by: Mencap
Deafblindness (Tuesday 8 December at 2.00pm – 3.00pm).
Delivered by: DeafblindNI
Autism (Wednesday 9 December at 10.45am – 12.00 noon).
‘Revised Autism Strategy for Northern Ireland – Key Priorities’
Delivered by: Judith Finlay (Department of Health)
‘WHSCT Question and Answer Session on Autism Services’
Delivered by: Dr Marie Martin (Specialist Clinical Psychologist) and Sarah McElholm (Specialist Speech and Language Therapist)
There are also a series of workshops organised, including:
- ‘Coping with Anxiety’ delivered by Gerry Farrell (Thursday 3 December at 2.00pm).
- ‘Food and Mood’ Healthy Eating (Friday 4 December at 2.00pm).
- Local Autism Services being delivered by Positive Futures (Wednesday 9 December at 2.00pm).
- ‘Support for Carers’ delivered by Carers NI (Thursday 10 December at 11.00am).
- The ONSIDE Project which is being delivered by Disability Action and targets social isolation being experienced by people with disabilities (Thursday 10 December at 2.00pm).
