Open Water Swimming Safety Courses 2022

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC) in partnership with the Fermanagh and Omagh Policing Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and Swim Ulster have organised various open water swimming safety courses during May 2022 as detailed below.

Each course costs £10.00 per person which has been subsidised by FODC and PCSP. Participants who have not attended open water swimming safety courses previously organised will be issued with a complimentary tow float.

Please note, courses are restricted to those who reside within the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area.

Course Description

 

Youth – Open Water Swimming Safety Course

This course encourages youths to enjoy the waterways in a safe manner. It will focus on similar elements to the introduction course which focuses upon aspects such as flotation, rotation, treading water with a greater emphasis on cold water shock, the dangers in relation to jumping and unknown objects beneath the surface, acclimatisation and developing essential skills.

Participants must be aged 11 – 17 years and be able to competently swim 100m unaided in order to participate in the programme.

A parent/guardian/carer must attend the online pre-course session and remain on-site at all times during the practical sessions.

 

Introductory – Open Water Swimming Safety Course

The introductory course aims to increase awareness for safe open water swimming focusing on entry and exit from water, acclimatisation, and cold shock. The course will focus on essential skills for open water swimmers including floatation, rotation, treading water, sighting and technique development.

 

Development – Open Water Swimming Safety Course

The development course is specifically for those who have attended any of the introductory courses previously and/or actively participate within open water swimming. The development course seeks to further participants knowledge and understanding in relation to open water swimming safety providing participants the opportunity to swim between set locations utilising skills taught in relation to sighting, improving stroke technique and adapting strokes.
