Top Connemara group to play the Strule

Published: 26th September 2016

Champion sean-nós singers, musicians and dancer all feature in the group called Na Cannabháin Bhána that will perform in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on Friday 7 October at 8pm.

The Ó Ceannabhán family from Connemara’s Gaeltacht area in Co Galway form the basis of this 5 piece group.  Singers Pól Ó Ceannabháin and his sister Caitríona have both won top awards at the coveted sean-nós singing competitions at Oireachtas na Gaeilge and have made many appearances on TG4, while another brother Josie is a lively accordion player.

Their nephew Rónán Ó Conghaile, who recently won the Oireachtas senior sean-nós dancing competition that is screened annually on TG4, will also perform at this event which has been organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.  As well as sean-nós singing the group will play a mixture of traditional jigs and reels and lively country and western songs that will be sure to get everyone on the floor at this cabaret style concert.

The following morning in the Strule Arts Centre there will be an opportunity for people to get a further taste of the traditions of Connemara.  Caitríona will lead a workshop in singing in Irish at 10am on Saturday 8 October, while Rónán will conduct a workshop in sean-nós dancing in Strule Arts Centre at 11:15am.  Both workshops have free entry and will give people a great opportunity to learn from these top class artists.

Tickets for the concert – £8 and £5 concessionary – are available from the Strule Arts Centre Box Office by calling 028 8224 7831, online at www.struleartscentre.co.uk or at the door on the night.
