New scheme provides free use of Council fitness facilities for elite athletes

Published: 9th July 2015

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has introduced a scheme for elite athletes, from the district, which will enable them to train at any of the Council’s four leisure centres free of charge.

The Elite Athlete Gold Card scheme aims to support local sportsmen and sportswomen, who have attained national or international success in their chosen sport, through complementary use of fitness and training facilities at the Bawnacre Centre, Irvinestown; Castle Park Leisure Centre, Lisnaskea; Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen; and Omagh Leisure Complex.

Admission to the scheme is subject to a successful application which will be administered through the Fermanagh and Omagh Sports Forum which is currently being established.

Encouraging local athletes to sign up to the Elite Athlete Gold Card scheme, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to providing opportunities for everyone in the district to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Council is pleased to introduce the Elite Athlete Gold Card scheme to support our athletes who perform at the highest level in their chosen sport.

These athletes often inspire others to get involved in a sporting activity and can act as important role models to those involved in sporting activities at a grass roots level.

We’re pleased to support our elite athletes in their chosen sport to help them achieve their full potential and progress as far as they possibly can.”

Applicants to the Elite Athlete Gold Card scheme must be involved in an amateur sport which is recognised by Sport NI and affiliated to a recognised Governing Body and have been selected to represent Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain or the United Kingdom in their chosen sport. Consideration will also be given to an applicant if their sport is administered and organised only on an Ulster or Interprovincial basis.

The Elite Athlete Gold Card scheme is only open to those athletes living in the Fermanagh and Omagh district, while students, who still have an original home residence in the district, can also apply.
