New food waste collection for rural households

New food waste collection service for rural households

Thanks to financial support of £468,000 from the DoEni Rethink Waste Capital Fund, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is pleased to introduce a separate food waste collection to the rural areas of the Fermanagh and Omagh district. This is in response to legislation coming into force which places a restriction on food waste, from commercial properties as well as households, going to landfill.

A third of waste collected in household bins is food waste, which has high financial and environmental costs when disposed of in landfill.  Food waste to landfill currently costs the Council and ratepayer approximately £120 per tonne. Rotting food in landfill produces methane gas which contributes to climate change.

The Council will roll out the scheme on a phased basis. Residents on the initial roll out of the scheme will have the following items delivered to their household over the coming weeks:

  • A 5-litre kitchen caddy with a roll of compostable liners. This will enable the collection of all food waste in the kitchen.
  • Further compostable liners can be collected free of charge from the Council Recycling Centres, Gortrush Depot Omagh, Killvilly Depot, Enniskillen and the Public Services Centre Omagh.
  • A 23-litre outdoor caddy that will be collected fortnightly. Please present the 23-litre caddy with your blue bin on your blue (recycling) bin collection day.
  • Information on how to participate in the scheme.

Food waste will be collected on a lorry that is designed split level with a separate pod attached to the front for separate food waste collection. Collections will commence on the week beginning 23 November 2015. There is no change to your blue and black/ green bin collection day. The separate food waste collection does not apply to households that already receive a brown bin collection.

The scheme will be further rolled out at a later date across remaining rural areas of the Fermanagh and Omagh district.

Food waste will be taken to a specialised plant where it is recycled to compost.
