Published: 18th May 2017

BBC Proms in the Park 2017 will be live from the National Trust property, Castle Coole in County Fermanagh on Saturday 9 September; it has been announced.

This is the first time the event will be staged in County Fermanagh, and gives local audiences the opportunity to join in the UK-wide celebrations bringing to a close two months of spectacular music-making at the BBC Proms.

Now in its 16th year, this year’s BBC Proms in the Park Northern Ireland will bring together internationally acclaimed performers from home and around the world. They will be performing alongside the Ulster Orchestra under the baton of David Brophy, in a programme which combines classical and contemporary music and a few surprises.

In previous years BBC Proms in the Park has been staged in Belfast; Hillsborough; Carrickfergus and Bangor.

BBC Proms in the Park remains one of BBC Northern Ireland’s most ambitious, and popular outside broadcasts, and this year 6,000 tickets will be available for the event at Castle Coole, Enniskillen.

This event will be part of the UK-wide celebrations of the Last Night of the Proms, which radiates out from the Royal Albert Hall to embrace all four nations of the UK on Saturday 9 September, with Last Night events in London, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The BBC Proms is the world’s largest classical music festival presenting over eight weeks of events and more than 90 concerts.

Viewers at home will be able to join in the excitement. On the night, audiences to the BBC Red Button can find a curated offering of highlights, BBC television network channels will join up with Castle Coole, County Fermanagh, broadcasting live at key moments. Highlights programmes will be recorded for later transmission on BBC NI television, BBC Four and the BBC iPlayer. Clipped performances from Castle Coole will also be available on BBC You Tube and the entire concert will also be live throughout the evening on BBC Radio Ulster, presented by John Toal.

BBC Proms in the Park in Northern Ireland will be hosted by Noel Thompson and Claire McCollum.

The event was announced at a press launch in Castle Coole on Wednesday 17 May 2017.

Helping to launch the event was young Fermanagh-born pianist, Oisin McManus (17), who recently won the Best Musician at the Fermanagh Feis, and making their first public appearance since being named as this year’s BBC Radio Ulster School Choir of the Year were the choir from St Lawrence’s Primary School, Fintona.
