Fermanagh & Omagh District Council has issued a final call for members for the newly formed Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum.

Both legacy councils, Omagh District Council and Fermanagh District Council, had a Sports Advisory Committee and a Sports Forum in existence and the new Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum will help to continue their good work into the future.

Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum will have a consultative role and will provide strategic direction for the provision of sport and recreation in the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council area.

Aims of Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum:

– To support the delivery of sport and recreation activities and opportunities in the community.

– To ensure that the work of the committee is carried out so as to fulfil the responsibilities within the “Terms of Reference”.

– To bring together expertise from a wide range of sport and recreation backgrounds to enhance and progress the operational delivery of sport and recreation in the community to meet the corporate objectives of Fermanagh & Omagh District Council.

– On behalf of Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, to administer and manage the “Elite Athlete Gold Card” scheme; to develop and manage a “Hall of Fame”; to assist in the organisation of the annual “Sports Awards”.

Objectives:

– To establish and maintain a Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum.

– To provide a link with the local community to raise awareness of issues.

– To act as a conduit for facilitating community consultation.

– To Administer, manage and deliver an “Elite Athlete Gold Card” scheme.

– To administer, manage and deliver a “Hall of Fame” to recognise the achievements of local athletes.

– To administer, consult and assist with the organization of the annual “Sports Awards”, recognising the success of local athletes and teams.

– To raise awareness of sport and recreation opportunities within the wider community.

– To ensure that service planners and providers make strategic and operational decisions with reference to potential impact on sport and recreation.

– To publicise, promote and disseminate information identifying opportunities which will help increase participation in sport and recreation in the community.

– To, where possible, influence decision making on service delivery and resource allocation by appropriate commissioning bodies, with a view to improving and developing sport and recreation in the community.

– To consider reports and recommendations from any organisations on matters concerning sport and recreation.

– To review and develop the F&OSF membership on an ongoing basis, developing new connections and appropriate partnerships over time.

– To monitor progress towards meeting the objectives contained within the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council corporate plan.

– To assist Fermanagh and Omagh District Council by advising generally on the collective opinions of local sports and recreation interests.

Membership:

Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum will be drawn from statutory, voluntary and community organisations whose activities impact upon the sporting and recreational opportunities provided in the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council area.  A total of 20 members will be appointed to the Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum. Ten elected representatives have already been appointed by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council.

Fermanagh & Omagh District Council is now seeking nominations from the voluntary sports sector for the remaining six members, three from the Fermanagh area and three from the Omagh area, to fulfil the complement of ten members from the sector.

Nominees must have a minimum of 5 years experience involved in a sport, a sports club, or the governing body of sport or sports forum/committee. It is intended that the Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum has representation from across the district and across as broad a range of sports as possible.

Langfield Primary School pupils plant new hedgerow

As part of its local Biodiversity Action Plan, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, is committed to the restoration of old hedgerows and the creation of new ones across the district and has recently been working with pupils from Langfield Primary School, Drumquin on the planting of a new hedgerow in the school grounds.
