Council Launches Green Dog Walker Scheme

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is adopting a novel approach in order to tackle the problem of dog fouling by encouraging dog owners and dog walkers to sign up to the Green Dog Walkers scheme.
The Green Dog Walkers scheme is a non-confrontational, friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling. Dog Owners can voluntarily “Take the Pledge” to always:
- clean up after their dog
- carry extra dog waste bags
- be happy to be approached to ‘lend’ a dog waste bag to those without
- be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs
The Council launched the scheme on Wednesday 18 July 2018 at the Lady of the Lake Festival in Irvinestown where dog owners had the opportunity to find out more about this innovative UK-wide community based scheme. They also had the opportunity to read the Green Dog Walkers pledge and to sign up to the scheme.
Speaking at the launch of the Green Dog Walkers scheme, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton said;
“dog fouling is a significant problem and is one of the most challenging issues the Council faces across the district. The Green Dog Walkers scheme has proved very successful in other Council areas at tackling issues around dog fouling with engagement of the local community the key to success.
I am confident that the Green Dog Walkers scheme will encourage dog owners and walkers to adopt a responsible attitude to cleaning up dog mess and in doing so help alleviate the difficulties caused by dog fouling.”
