A one day introduction to hockey coaching course will take place at Omagh Leisure Complex on Sunday 10 January 2016.

The ‘Fundamentals of Coaching Hockey Award’, delivered by Ulster Hockey in partnership with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, is an opportunity for adults involved in youth sport to gain a certified qualification in Hockey Fundamentals.

Hockey Fundamentals is the first course in the hockey coaching pathway and is one of the requirements for anyone wishing to progress on to the next accredited stage in hockey coaching.

Laura McDermott, Ulster Hockey Active Clubs Officer said that Ulster Hockey has seen an increased interest in hockey in the Fermanagh and Omagh district over the past year.

“Our links with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Active Communities programme has allowed us to secure a Hockey Fundamental Coaching course at the Omagh Leisure Complex. The course is a way to develop hockey coaches in the area to help the sport continue to grow and we are thankful for the Council’s continued support,” said Laura.

“This is a great opportunity for local coaches or aspiring coaches in the West of the province to gain a certified qualification in Hockey Fundamentals. We look forward to working with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in the future through coaching delivery in schools, clubs, communities and Ulster Hockey Active Clubs Programmes,” she added.

Speaking about the forthcoming Hockey Fundamentals course, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“The Council is pleased to work in partnership with Ulster Hockey to provide people with the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification in hockey coaching. We hope this will enable even more of our young residents to try a new sport or develop their hockey skills while getting active and having fun.”

The ‘Fundamentals of Coaching Hockey Award’, which is designed for adults involved in youth sport such as parents, teachers, youth leaders and volunteers, will provide participants with best practice training on organising and delivering coaching sessions suitable for beginners. The course will also focus on the way in which  children learn sport and will be reinforced by the Irish Hockey Association’s (IHA) coaching ethos; ‘we hear we forget, we see we understand, we do we learn.’

The Hockey Fundamentals course takes place on Sunday 10 January 2016, indoors at the Omagh Leisure Complex from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. The cost to participate is £20.00. Application forms are available to download from the relevant section of the Council’s website or by telephoning Laura McDermott, Ulster Hockey on 028 9070 1417 / 07889 363 484 or emailing laura.mcdermott@ulsterhockey.com.

Please note, applicants must be aged 16 and over. The closing date for applications is Monday 4 January 2016.
