Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and Extern, has organised two free angling ‘come and try it’ sessions on Saturday 25 August 2018 as part of Sport Northern Ireland’s Every Body Active 2020 programme .

The free sessions, facilitated by suitably qualified coaches, will take place at Extern’s newly developed angling facilities at Garvary, Enniskillen. The two-hour sessions are suitable for those aged 8 – 17 years and are available from 10am – 12noon and 1pm – 3pm.

Speaking about the forthcoming sessions, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Howard Thornton said;

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to be involved with the delivery of these sessions. Given the high quality of the angling waters which we have on our doorstep, the taster sessions present an ideal opportunity for young people to find out more about this very relaxing pastime and to avail of this opportunity to gain valuable advice from qualified coaches.”

Sport Northern Ireland Chair, George Lucas commented;

“Sport NI is delighted to be investing over £6m of National Lottery funding in the 11 District Councils across Northern Ireland. By working on the delivery of Every Body Active 2020 we will begin to see real changes in sport and physical activity participation – especially amongst women and girls, people with a disability and those in areas of greatest social need. We look forward to seeing the impact of our investment for people in our communities, helping them to enjoy, engage and excel in sport and leading to a population which is more active more often”

Mark Rogers, Extern Regional Manager said;

“Extern’s Roscor Youth Village is delighted to be working in conjunction with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and DAERA to promote angling opportunities for children and young people from across the council area. The lake at Garvary (Loughavilly) is being developed as the first community angling hub in Northern Ireland and will aim to create opportunities for young people to enjoy the outdoors, gain new skills and be involved in a range of activities centred on, in and around the lake.

The new angling hub will provide coaching and participation opportunities in both coarse and game angling for all participants and will have an angling club based at the facility offering follow-on membership opportunities for new members in the sport.  All participants who will visit the new angling hub will participate in the CAST NI Angling Programme with qualified angling coaches offering young people six levels from beginner at Level 1 to advanced at Level 6.”

Places on the sessions are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Registration for the sessions open on Tuesday 14 August 2018 at 9.00 am.
