Irish language activities in the district

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will unveil its season of Irish language activities in the district in Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on Wednesday 4 September 2019 at an Information Night commencing at 7:30 pm.

The Information Night will take the form of a social evening and as well as the launch of the programme of Irish language events for the coming year, local young traditional musicians will be providing entertainment. Refreshments will also be served at the event.

Wednesday 11 September sees the resumption of Irish language classes and activities in Strule Arts Centre for the coming season. These will run for 12 weeks until Wednesday 27 November 2019.

The popular sean-nós and set dancing class will run from 6pm – 7pm giving participants the opportunity to learn these traditional forms of Irish dancing. The classes are not only a great form of exercise but also are a very enjoyable social activity. All levels are catered for in this class.

Singing in Irish in a group setting takes place between 7pm and 8pm. This is not only a very enjoyable social activity but is also an effective way of learning Irish. It involves learning popular traditional songs in Irish that participants have the opportunity of performing in concerts and events throughout the year as part of singing group Ceoltóirí na hÓmaí.

The Irish language classes in Strule Arts Centre run from 8pm – 9.30pm on Wednesday nights. Beginner, improver and advanced levels are all catered for in these formally structured classes with the emphasis on speaking the language.

Meanwhile, you can kickstart your Irish Language learning with an all-day Irish Language Class for adults at Ederney townhall on Saturday 7 September between 10 am and 4 pm. The class costs just £5 and places can be booked by visiting www.enniskillencastle.co.uk.

A registration night for the weekly adult Irish Language classes at Enniskillen Castle will take place on Thursday 12 September 2019 from 7.30 pm -8.30 pm at the Castle. The 10 week programme commences on Thursday 19 September from 7.30pm -9.30 pm at a cost of £25/ £20 concession. You can also register online at www.enniskillencastle.co.uk.

There will be plenty of opportunities as part of the European Open Heritage Days initiative to experience the Irish Language starting with a film night on Friday 13 September in Enniskillen Castle. This is a free event with 3 Irish Language Short Films shown with subtitles.

On Saturday 14 September there will be a free guided tour through the medium of Irish language highlighting some of the jewels of the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO

Global Geopark. Sites being visited include Killykeegan Nature Reserve for a bilingual tour of the site in Irish and English languages, Cavan Burren Park, Blacklion Market House, Hanging Rock, Cladagh Glen for a reading of Fermanagh Folk Tales (with optional nature walk), and a guided tour of Marble Arch Caves. Enjoy outdoor readings in the idyllic setting of Claddagh Glen. Local Writers, Seamas Mac Annaidh & Carlo Gébler, will read a selection of Fermanagh Folk Tales, sometimes with a twist! Saturday 14 September Readings at 1.00 pm and 2.20 pm in the Claddagh Glen, suitable for all the family.

Seolfar Clár na nImeachtaí Gaeilge don bhliain seo romhainn ag an imeacht seo a mbeidh ceol le cloisteáil ó cheoltóirí traidisiúnta óga agus sólaistí ar fáil ag an imeacht seo ar féidir cairdeas a dhéanamh ann.

Dé Céadaoin 11 Meán Fómhair a cuirfear tús leis na ranganna agus imeachtaí don seasúr seo chugainn in Ionad Ealaíne na Sruthaile. Leanfaidh na ranganna seo ar aghaidh ar feadh dhá sheachtain déag go dtí Dé Céadaoin 27 Samhain.

Ón 6 i.n.go dtí 7 i.n. a bheas an rang damhsa sean-nós agus seit ar siúl ina mbíonn seans ag daoine na damhsaí traidisiúnta seo a fhoghlaim. Aclaíocht iontach atá sna damhsaí seo atá ann fosta mar ghníomh shóisialta taitneamhach a thugann faoiseamh don intinn.

Bíonn grúpa amhránaíochta ag dul ar aghaidh idir 7 i.n. agus 8 i.n. Gníomhaíocht taitneamhach eile é seo atá éifeachtach mar shlí chun Gaeilge a fhoghlaim. Foghlaimíonn na rannpháirtithe amhráin traidisiúnta le chéile a mbíonn seans acu a cheol le chéile faoin ainm Ceoltóirí na hÓmaí ag ceolchoirmeacha agus imeachtaí eile i rith na bliana.
