Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) in conjunction with the PSNI and Drink Wise Age Well have launched a Summer Anti- Drink Driving Campaign.

Speaking at the launch, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, Chairman of the Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP, said;

“Road Safety remains the number one priority locally for the PCSP. Despite consistent warnings from police there are still people who get behind the wheel of their car while unfit to drive due to alcohol or drugs. For many the holiday season is just about to start so we urge people if they are going out to socialise and will be drinking alcohol to always make arrangements on how they are going to get home. If drinking alcohol, please keep car keys in your pocket and help us to keep our roads safe for everyone this summer.

Nobody wants to experience the tragic events which can unfold following a Road Traffic Accident. Too many accidents are still caused by motorists whose driving is impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving puts drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk, and each year it claims the lives of many people.”

PSNI Supt. Clive Beatty said:

“Just one drink can impair your decision making. Just one drink can cause a collision. Just one drink could kill. So, our message is very simple; Never EVER drink and drive.

It’s disappointing that despite our repeated and well publicised warnings, a minority of people completely disregarded the safety of themselves and others by taking the shameful and incredibly dangerous risk of driving after drinking.

We would ask the motoring public ‘what can you live without?’ Can you live without your driving license? Can you still do your job? Can you still care for your family? If you take the risk of driving after drinking, you can expect to be detected by police. You can expect to be prosecuted and lose your driving license. If you cause a collision in which someone is killed or seriously injured, you can expect a custodial sentence.”

To help launch the campaign, Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP in partnership with Drink Wise Age Well brought a Crash Car Simulator to Omagh town centre to highlight the dangers of drink and drug driving. The Crash Car Simulator will also visit Enniskillen later this summer.
