Omagh has scooped a prestigious accolade in recognition of its evening and night time economy.

The Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) has awarded Omagh Purple Flag status for its excellence in entertainment and evening hospitality.

Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – which recognises areas that provide a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

A number of local agencies and organisations including the PSNI, Transport NI, Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership and representatives from the community and voluntary sector sit on the Omagh Purple Flag working group to ensure that the town continues to provide great entertainment, exceptional hospitality and a safe night out for visitors.

Speaking about Omagh achieving Purple Flag status, Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Mary Garrity, said:

“We are delighted that Omagh has been awarded Purple Flag status in recognition of its quality entertainment and hospitality.

The award is a result of a businesses, partner agencies and Council working together to develop and enhance the visitor experience of Omagh’s night time economy.

In Northern Ireland there are only four other towns and cities that have Purple Flag status. The fact that one of these is Enniskillen is a fantastic achievement for the Fermanagh and Omagh district.

I commend all those involved in helping Omagh to achieve Purple Flag status and I hope that the status encourages even more people to visit Omagh and the wider area to experience everything it has to offer.”

Omagh is just the fifth town to have the coveted Purple Flag status in Northern Ireland. The others are Enniskillen, Armagh, Derry/Londonderry and Newry.
